Monks in anime: The Boy and the Beast

     The Boy and the Beast is not only another example of anime with a monk in it, but the video for this 

reflection is also created by someone who talks more about this anime in the book Anime Impact.  Not 

much is said about the monk character in this video until the end of this video and even then, this 

character is only mentioned as one of the characters who helps explain what is going on in the movie.  

This character is not even referred to as a monk, but as a pig since he is one of the beast people in the 

world of beast people that exists separately from the human world.  

    I guess a world of beast people needs monks too.  I am not really sure what this monk does in terms of 

how he lives differently than other people do.  He does live with the boy and the beast and help them both 

with their training in the beast people world, which I guess would make him like some kind of hermit, but 

one of the other characters who is not a monk also does that in his own way as well.  Everyone has their 

own way of doing things.  This includes monks too, both monks as individuals and monks in some kind 

of communal setting.
