Love and burden in Re: Zero

In the first year I did my summer anime class, I had a student present the anime Re: Zero. I did
not think much about it at the time (probably because I was still trying to figure out what I was
doing, which is still the case), but now, there is more I can say about it with the help of a video about
this anime that talks about the two major themes in it, which are love and burden.
Love and burden are seen in many different ways in this anime. For example, Subaru, the main
character, bears the many burdens of being transported to a world where he does not know what he is
supposed to do in it despite trying to figure that out. Trying to figure that out is also another one of
his many burdens as his power in this new world is the ability to die and come back as if nothing
ever happened, except he is the only one who remembers what happens and cannot tell anyone about
what happens. There are also girls that Subaru can love in this new world, which is where the ideas
of burden and love can be seen together.
Love is a burden and there are burdens associated with love, which can also be seen in many
different ways in this anime. For example, Subaru loves the character Emilia because he thinks he is
supposed to (part of the transported to a new world idea seen in some anime like this one), even if it
means dying for her and her not loving him as much as he loves her. Rem, another female character,
does fall in love with him, but this is complicated by the burdens of her relationship with her sister
Ram, as well as the burdens of his relationship with Subaru as a whole, which is also complicated.
The ideas of love and burden, as well as of love as a burden and the burdens of love, are not only
seen in this anime, but also in life, which the video also talks about. Love is a burden because it is
complicated and cannot be understood. The burdens of love involve loving anyway despite the
difficulties of it, which is done in this anime (and others) and in life.
