The evolution of Pokemon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04v0_jST4gs - 12:23

Not only have I usually had students in my summer anime classes present the anime Pokemon, but

the anime has also been talked about recently due to what has recently happened in it, which is that the

main character has finally won a Pokemon League Championship after a long time of that not

happening.  There has been a lot of talk about what this means for the future of this main character, but

what I would like to focus on is what this character has already achieved and how he has changed, or

evolved, over the years with the anime itself.

In the Pokemon anime, evolution involves a permanent change.  It's not always clear how or why it

happens with certain Pokemon when it can happen (usually because it has to at the moment - evolution

in the video games makes more sense, which is one reason why I played the games longer than

watching the show).  Over the years, the main character has done something similar in terms of his

mentality (it's not always obvious).  After his recent achievement, this begs the question if he is finally

what he set out to do, which is to become what is known as a Pokemon Master.

The fact that a Pokemon Master is an ambiguous term doesn't help in answering this question, as

well as the fact that there are several ways of becoming a Pokemon Master, which the video in this

reflection explains in detail.  Personally, I always thought being a Pokemon Master was about being

the best, or strongest, trainer, which happens by always winning battles, including battles against all

gym leaders and other high level trainers (something I liked doing myself in the video games with

strategy - let's just say the anime is not always big on strategy).  Anyway, from what the main character

has done in the Pokemon anime over the years, I would say he's a Pokemon Master.  Whatever that

means, he's certainly changed over the years in terms of his thinking (definitely not physically), which

is something everyone does, or at least should do.
