The Worlds of Made in Abyss

When checking out the anime Made in Abyss, thanks to the video in this reflection that came up on
my youtube account as a recommended video recently, I noticed it does a lot in terms of world
building. The world building in Made in Abyss leads it to have what seems to be multiple worlds in
one located in the middle of another world, specifically a city. This is seen in this video by a map that
resembles a typical way of how the conscious and unconscious are represented by an iceberg. The
conscious is the little part of the iceberg that is above ground, or what you can see (in the case of Made
in Abyss, this would be the city surrounding the abyss) and the unconscious is the rest of it that is
below the ground, or what you can't see (in the case of Made in Abyss, this would be the abyss itself).
This also leads to the two main characters having an interesting adventure by not going anywhere in
the sense of a place outside the city since the worlds to explore are already in the city. All they need to
do is go down into these worlds from where they currently are, or descend into their unconscious
selves.
This descent is not easy, but what helps these main characters with it is each other, which is another
way of understanding worlds, meaning people can mean the world to each other. They both have a
reason, or reasons, to make this descent to the very bottom of the abyss, which there is no returning
from (what also makes this journey different - a usual adventure is depicted by The Hero's Journey
diagram seen in this video, as well as other typical adventures seen in other anime). The main
characters also have strengths and weaknesses that make them seem like one complete person. They
also come across other characters that help them, like one that decides to accompany them after helping
them, and vice versa.
