The spirit of Tokyo Godfathers

There are several movies out there that can be considered Christmas movies.  I think what can

make such movies be considered Christmas movies is that the spirit of these movies is similar to

what people usually refer to as the Christmas spirit.  Being set around the time of Christmas helps with

this too, but that doesn't need to be too obvious (it's probably better if it isn't actually so movies like this

can be enjoyed anytime).  Tokyo Godfathers, an anime movie created by the late Satoshi Kon (I have

been reflecting on his works recently - that will end with my post for next week), is an example of a

movie with the Christmas spirit, but what exactly is this spirit?  With the help of the video for this

reflection, I will attempt to answer this question.

The Christmas spirit is remembering what Christmas is all about, which is that it's more important to

give than receive, as well as to remember what you do give and receive.  In Tokyo Godfathers, this is seen in

homeless people finding an abandoned baby and doing what they can to find the parents of this baby.

While doing what they can to find the parents of this baby, they learn more about themselves,

specifically about their spiritual beliefs (this movie, including this video, makes a distinction between

religious and spiritual beliefs with Japan as an example, which I think is important - I also happen to be

in a World Religions course for graduate school as I type this).
