Monks in anime: Fushigi Yugi (Mysterious Play)

https://ww1.gogoanimes.org/watch/fushigi-yuug-episode-25 - 17:25 - 21:05

In the list of the monks in anime provided in the link that is in the post that introduces this series on

my blog, there is a brief description of only a few words provided for each of these monks that appear

in anime.   For the monk character in the anime Fushigi Yugi, there are some things missing from his

description.  Besides the fact that he can also use magic (spirit power?) and that he is known as a

wandering traveler (I guess you can call monks that), he also wears a mask over his face that is actually

another face, which is seen in the video for this reflection.

The main character of this anime is going through problems involving love and friendship that she

does not know what to do about at this point in the anime.  She talks to the monk character about these

problems, but she initially asks him why he wears a mask that looks like another face.  After listening

to what the main character says, he tells her why he wears such a mask, which also involves an

example of what the main character is currently dealing with.  Love and friendship are two different

things and you cannot have one without the other, which is a lesson that this monk had to learn the hard

way before his life as monk.  As a result of this lesson, he got a scar to remind himself of it, which

bothers people when they see it, so he wears a mask that looks like a face so people can see something

that does not bother them.

I am not sure why love and friendship are two different things and why you cannot have one

without the other or why a scarred face would bother people, but listening to others is what can help

you with your problems.  Thinking about what other people tell you is also important in listening to

them, as well as actually acknowledging that, which is what this main character does.  She also

resolves her problems in her own way by having both love and friendship, which should be the same

thing and not two different things.

Anyway, this monk character is also one of the guardians of the main character in her quest for

having both love and friendship, as well as for other reasons.  Besides helping her in her fight by

actually fighting, which is what her other guardians do too in their own ways, he also gives her advice

on what she wants.
