Anime Lectio: Hero Without a Class
1. Why do Anime Lectio?
Anime Lectio is a time for us to stop and take a breath. Between work, activities, family life, and social media, our minds are always moving. We rarely take time to contemplate and ask, why am I watching this anime? What’s the point of all this? And, how is this making me feel?
2. Put away all distractions
(phones, work, etc.)
We are so enslaved to things that stimulate our minds. Let this be a moment for us to free our minds, look inside of ourselves, and be at peace. The only device you need is the one you use for this blog.
3. Deep Breathing - Open yourself to God’s Presence
Take several deep breaths. Let your mind relax. If you’ve had any questions, desires, or struggles that
you’ve been hiding or stuffing away, let them rise up to the surface. Remember God places all our
thoughts and desires inside of us, and He uses them to draw us closer to Himself. God gives us a
community to help us understand who we are and what He is calling us to do. The faces of people you
know and don't know are like signs of God’s presence.
4. Think About What’s on Your Mind in Relation to the Anime
Think about what’s been on your mind in relation to the anime. The following is an example of such thoughts written by me.
They say that hard work beats talent, although it's better to say that hard work beats talent that doesn't work hard. Talent isn't a bad thing, but it can be if you just rely on that and don't work hard too since talent itself isn't always good enough to beat hard work. This is especially true if the one(s) who work hard think that they don't need something like talent to hold them back and rely on just that instead of working hard in order to always improve themselves. An example of this can be seen in the series Hero Without a Class.
5. Brief and written explanation of the anime
Pay attention to how the brief and written explanation of the anime seen on this blog, or seeing the anime for yourself since that's better than any explanation, might “speak” to you or shed light on the things that have been on your minds.
When a boy in a society where your class determines what you do finds out that he is considered classless, he ends up working hard in order to be stronger instead of just simply relying on a class. By working hard when fighting others and/or learning from others, he can learn their skills and even improve them. He first focuses on improving his sword skills by challenging his mom, who happens to be the strongest class of sword fighter, and a random boy, who is actually a girl that he meets again when he decides to leave home for a city known for it's sword fighting. When he realizes he can't learn anything else there after having various adventures there, he decides to go back home by himself to fight his mom again (the girl he meets again follows him back in order to stay with him). After being able to beat her this time, he decides he wants to learn to fight with magic from his dad, who happens to be the strongest class of magic user. After learning a little about using magic from his dad, he decides to leave home again to learn more about magic from a city known for it's magic schools, attending all of them somehow in order to get better at all kinds of magic. When he realizes that he can't learn anything else there, he plans to go back home, but is ambushed by the generals in his long lost sister's empire that she created for people like her brother who are classless and others to not judge people who are classless. However, he realizes that being classless is a good thing since it doesn't limit what he can do, as well as want to do, which is to keep traveling in order to learn more.
6. Reflect on the anime
Has this brief and written explanation of the anime shed any light on what's been on your minds? The following is an example of a reflection on the anime from me.
Based on the idea of hard work always beats talent that doesn't work hard, I think that discrimination that happens because of that is a form of jealousy. Discrimination against someone who is different from you because they don't have a class and you do, which I didn't include a lot of in the previous description of the series (left out a lot of things to focus more on the more serious aspects of it), doesn't make sense. Talent can also be a bad thing if it's used to discriminate and judge people based on their class, or what they can do based on that, not on what they can actually do. This also depends on what people think, especially the person, or people, who don't have a class and thinks it means something that other people don't think, which is something to think/pray about.
7. Final Prayer
Please voice any prayer intentions for friends, family, or people around the world that relate to this anime. The following is an example written by me.
Let us pray that we can understand what it means to discriminate people based on their class and what it means to them.
