Anime Lectio: Kaiju Girl Caramelise

                                                         1. Why do Anime Lectio? 

Anime Lectio is a time for us to stop and take a breath. Between work, activities, family life, and social media, our minds are always moving. We rarely take time to contemplate and ask, why am I watching this anime? What’s the point of all this? And, how is this making me feel? 


2. Put away all distractions 

(phones, work, etc.)

We are so enslaved to things that stimulate our minds. Let this be a moment for us to free our minds, look inside of ourselves, and be at peace. The only device you need is the one you use for this blog.


3. Deep Breathing - Open yourself to God’s Presence


Take several deep breaths. Let your mind relax. If you’ve had any questions, desires, or struggles that

you’ve been hiding or stuffing away, let them rise up to the surface. Remember God places all our

thoughts and desires inside of us, and He uses them to draw us closer to Himself. God gives us a

community to help us understand who we are and what He is calling us to do. The faces of people you

know and don't know are like signs of God’s presence. 


4. Think About What’s on Your Mind in Relation to the Anime

Think about what’s been on your mind in relation to the anime.  The following is an example of such thoughts written by me. 


Being accepted by others can be difficult when you can't accept yourself.  Not being able to accept yourself usually happens because there's a part of yourself that you can't accept, which makes you think you can't accept yourself at all and that no one else will due to overthinking about it.  It's also more challenging when the part of you that you can't accept is something that other people can see and freaks you out because people can see it, as well as influenced by your emotions.  An interesting example of this can be seen in the series Kaiju Girl Caramelise.


5. Brief and written explanation of the anime

Pay attention to how the brief and written explanation of the anime seen on this blog, as well as seeing the anime for yourself since I think that's better than any explanation, might “speak” to you or shed light on the things that have been on your minds.


A girl with a mysterious condition that causes her to transform into a kaiju when she falls in love with someone isolates herself in order to stay in her human form.  However, this starts to backfire when a boy in her class becomes interested in her because of this and wants to get to know her, which she wants, but knows it probably wouldn't work if they dated.  She tries to make it work anyway, despite the fact that she transforms partially, and even fully sometimes, managing to hide these transformations from him, as well as her friends/family (even when they partially/fully know about it themselves) in various ways.  But when another kaiju attacks her city in order to find her, she ends up fighting the other kaiju by transforming into a kaiju in order to save everyone, which leads to the boy figuring out the girl she's dating can transform into a kaiju when he tries to help her.  The girl still doesn't think the boy can accept her, but after accepting herself, she realizes that he can accept her for who she is.


6.  Reflect on the anime

Has this brief and written explanation of the anime shed any light on what's been on your minds?  The following is an example of a reflection on the anime from me.


Not being able to accept yourself fully is difficult because you don't know if it's a problem for the other person or just a problem for you until you can let the other person know about it. What may be a problem for you may not be a problem for someone else. One of the things that interests me a lot about the romantic relationship in the series is that near the beginning of it, the boy holds the girl's hand, but it's her kaiju hand and at the end, the boy does the same thing. Granted, it does look like the boy does it near the beginning without knowing he's holding her kaiju hand, but at the end, it looks like he does know. This suggests that the boy could accept the girl the whole time and that she what she was worried about was all in her head. Fully accepting ourselves is the only way we can be fully accepted by others, which is easier said than done, but worth praying about.


7. Final Prayer

Toriko's search for God

The diversity of Blood Lad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mun8B8jNe0w  - 4:26      The kind of diversity that anime usually focuses on are the differences between the natural and the supernatural.  What I find interesting about this diversity is that it isn't always so diverse, meaning there are things between the natural and supernatural that can be shared.  For example, appearance.  Sometimes, demons can look human.  Not only can demons look human sometimes, but they can also act like it sometimes.  The anime Blood Lad provides examples of this (the video I use for this reflection is the only review video of the entire anime I could find - there is a second season being planned for 2020 - 2021).     In the anime Blood Lad, the action starts due to an interaction between a human and a demon.
