Monks in anime: Asura

In the anime movie Asura, a traveling monk (his name is Houshi, but it's not used in the anime)

is one of the characters who attempts to help the main character overcome his suffering as a result of

thinking that he's just a beast, which is seen in the scenes from the movie for this reflection.  When the

monk first meets this character, he thinks he's a human but also not a human.  The main character also

cannot really say much at first, so he's pretty much attacking anyone in order to survive.  The monk is

able to protect himself when he's attacked by him with the power of prayer (and probably also knowing

and/or trying to understand what's going on), which he also thinks can help his attacker (namu amida

butsu is a Buddhist sutra to pray when suffering in order to relieve suffering).  Understanding prayer

doesn't matter as much as doing it.  What also helps you with suffering are your other experiences, which

the main character has plenty of before meeting this monk again.  However, saying things and doing

things, like talking about fighting your beastly nature and doing this fighting when you need to do it, are

two different things.
