Monks in anime: Maria the Virgin Witch

Maria the Virgin Witch is an anime that tackles the interesting issues of why God allows violence in

the world and why intervening in such violence is both a good and bad thing. The parts of an episode

from this series for this reflection show the beginning of the role that some of the monks in this series

play in these issues. In the first part of the episode for this reflection, the two important monks in this

series are talking about what Maria is doing, which is trying to stop the fighting between England and

France since she doesn't like war. They don't understand why she's trying to do this, which leads to the

second part of the episode for this reflection where they meet with her to talk about what she's doing. The

monks, especially the one that does the talking with her, are interested in the fact that her name is Maria

like the Blessed Mother and that she also shares her virginal status, but being a witch is what makes what

she's doing bad. The Church tries to maintain natural law and what Maria is doing is going against that.

After their conversation, which doesn't really change anything, the monks talk about what to do now,

which is seen in the third part of the episode for this reflection. It's decided that they don't need to do

anything about it until they need to, which is seen in the rest of this series.
