Anime Lectio: My Wife Has No Emotion
1. Why do Anime Lectio?
Anime Lectio is a time for us to stop and take a breath. Between work, activities, family life, and social media, our minds are always moving. We rarely take time to contemplate and ask, why am I watching this anime? What’s the point of all this? And, how is this making me feel?
2. Put away all distractions
(phones, work, etc.)
We are so enslaved to things that stimulate our minds. Let this be a moment for us to free our minds, look inside of ourselves, and be at peace.
3. Deep Breathing
Take several deep breaths. Let your mind relax. If you’ve had any questions, desires, or struggles that you’ve been hiding or stuffing away, let them rise up to the surface.
4. Open yourself to God’s Presence
Remember God places all our thoughts and desires inside of us, and He uses them to draw us closer to Himself. God gives us a community to help us understand who we are and what He is calling us to do. The faces of other people you know and don't know are like signs of God’s presence.
5. Think About What’s on Your Mind in Relation to the Anime
Think about what’s been on your mind in relation to the anime. The following is an example of such thoughts written by me.
What does it mean to have no emotion? Does it mean being like a robot? A recent youtube ad I've seen asks starts with the question, "What does a robot know about love?" I don't remember what the ad is for since I'm able to skip it, which I usually do with ads when I can skip them, but it is an interesting question to think about. An answer to it can be seen in many ways, like in the series My Wife Has No Emotion.
6. Brief and written explanation of the anime
Pay attention to how the brief and written explanation of the anime seen on this blog, or seeing the anime for yourself since that's better than any explanation, might “speak” to you or shed light on the things that have been on your minds.
A socially awkward guy buys a robot to cook for him since he's also too busy with work to cook for himself. He likes spending time with this robot, so he talks with this robot about marrying her, which she agrees to after she looks up what that means in order to understand that. While they aren't legally married, they do like to spend more time with each other, learning more about themselves, each other, and the robot that they decide to raise together as their kid. This also involves letting other people, like their new friends and members of the guy's family, know what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they feel about what they are doing, which is good enough (more than that) for everybody. As a result of this, the guy and his robot wife, with their robot child, move into a bigger house to continue their life together in a new place.
7. Reflect on the anime
Has this brief and written explanation of the anime shed any light on what's been on your minds? The following is an example of a reflection on the anime from me.
Emotion can usually be measured by what you see. Throughout the series My Wife Has No Emotion, the "emotion" seen by the robot wife is usually seen in what she asks, what she does, and her reactions to what other people do. While what is seen is not what is usually understood to be human emotion, I think the only real difference is the fact that its emotion based on what a robot does and not what a human does, meaning there is human emotion and robot emotion, not emotion and no emotion since having no emotion is an emotion. I'm not sure if this is the right answer, or if this is one of those things where there is a right answer, but I think it's something to think, as well as pray, about.
8. Final Prayer
Please voice any prayer intentions for friends, family, or people around the world that relate to this anime. The following is an example written by me.
Let us pray that we can understand what having no emotion means, as well as the difference between human emotion and robot emotion.
